Maersk halts Red Sea shipping until further notice

News

With our comprehensive portfolio of international container shipping services, including LCL and FCL import and export operations, the U-Freight Group notes that CNBC is reporting that Maersk has paused shipping through the Red Sea until further notice after one of its vessels came under attack from Houthi militants over the weekend.

The decision by the Danish shipping giant appears to extend a 48-hour pause implemented in the immediate aftermath of the attack.

Repeated attacks by Houthi militants on vessels in the Red Sea have raised concerns about disruptions to global trade through the key waterway.

According to CNBC, Maersk announced this development yesterday in an update to customers.

Maersk said an investigation into the incident into the most recent incident is ongoing and it will continue to pause all cargo movement through the area while it further assess the constantly evolving situation.

Vessels will be re-routed and continue their journey around the Cape of Good Hope in Africa in cases where this makes sense, the company added.

It remains to be seen if other lines that have resumed some sailings through the region, will now follow Maersk's example.

The U-Freight Group's ocean freight teams will continue to monitor the disruption in our ongoing attempts to reduce any disruption to shipments.
