No solution to overcapacity in container shipping
2023-10-16
News

With our comprehensive portfolio of international container shipping services, the U-Freight Group was interested in comments made by Stefan Verberckmoes, senior analyst at Alphaliner, in a keynote address delivered at the Intermodal Europe 2023 show being held in Amsterdam this week.

Reported in World Cargo News magazine, Verberckmoes said that capacity management has its limits and capacity is expected to outgrow demand, no matter what the carriers will try.

He noted that slot capacity scheduled to be delivered in 2024 will be three times bigger than in a normal year with the fleet expanding by just over 9%, and added that while he expects scrappage levels to increase in 2024, some scheduled deliveries will slip into 2025 and more slow speed streaming will temper the increase, these factors will not be sufficient to prevent further overcapacity in the industry.

He attributed the strong orderbook to ocean carriers modernising their fleets by contracting greener-fuel tonnage and said that freight rates, which have fallen very steeply over the past 12 months, are likely to fall further and a time when costs, particularly those for fuel, are increasing.
